This Cedar foldover card table, with
a faceted pedestal and concave quadriform base, was made in the 1840s,
probably in Tasmania, where it was sourced.
-
The top is all Cedar except for the
underneath cross support which is made of Kauri Pine.
-
The pedestal is constructed of Cedar
facets approximately 1" thick . It is attached to the base by an iron
rod, the join between pedestal and base being concealed by a finely
moulded cedar collar.
-
The base is Cedar veneered over Kauri
Pine. It is supported on concealed casters underneath bun feet.
-
There is cross-banding around the
(original) baize on the (opened) top; and also on the curved surfaces on
the sides of the base.
-
The table is made of fine quality
Cedar. The top is ribbon Cedar; and finely figured Cedar has been used
elsewhere. The colour is a rich brown, with orange/red highlights. The
finish is original. The condition is excellent, apart from an expected
blemish or two on the top.
-
The table is large, impressive and
elegant. Its dimensions (top closed) are: width: 36”; height: 29”;
depth: 17.5”.
