*Joseph Bramah (1748-1814) was an inventor who is recognised as one of England's finest locksmiths. In 1784, he patented a high security lock for furniture which operates on a spring mechanism.

Bramah locks were much more expensive than ordinary locks and were reserved for the finest furniture. The firm commenced by Joseph Bramah remains in business today.
